Tales of a Pregnant Dad: The X-men Papa

Jeff Carrane is a manager at a liquor store and a volunteer fire fighter. He is also a really good dude and an even better dad to his three year-old son, Bennett. Jeff and his wife, Whitney are less than two months away from the arrival of their second child. I sat down with him recently to talk a little dad strategy before the big day.

This is Jeff when the first member of his X-men team was born. You have to look extra close to see the adamantium claws.

Did you find out if you’re having a boy or a girl? Why or why not?

We did find out, we’re having a boy. We found out cause my wife would have gone insane if we didn’t.

A boy! Do you know his name yet?

We picked out the name Colton because it’s the only one we could both agree on, and the middle name will be Remy because his brother’s middle name is Logan. And my two favorite X-men growing up were Wolverine and Gambit and those are their first names. Now I can say I have my own X-men team.

I have to say that I think it was a good choice to name your kids after the X-men’s first names instead of going with “Wolverine” and “Gambit.” So, what about this pregnancy, what have you learned this time around?

To get used to giving massages, listening to complaining, and holding back hair.

What are your “must bring”s for the hospital?.

A good book, if you have a PSP or gameboy that too, snacks, a comfy pillow, and if you can get away with it, a little bit of scotch.

Are you nervous about the delivery?

Most nervous about getting there in time and safely, with our first delivery we may have waited a little too long, although we still got there in time.

What kind of birthing partner are you?

I’d like to say supportive and confident, I’m not a “Ra Ra!” cheerleader but will be next to my wife the whole time, get her whatever she needs, and have confidence in our doctors and nurses to do their jobs well.

Does anything scare you about having another child?

Finding the energy to keep up with two little monsters!

How does Bennett feel about the coming baby?

I think confused at first but now excited and curious.

What about you, what are you most excited about with having a new baby?

Just being around a little baby again, holding him, feeding him, watching him grow, and now being able to share that with our first born son and watch him be a brother.

“Watch him be a brother.” I love that. What advice are you going to remind yourself of when Colton arrives?

Enjoy every second you get with your kids, take lots of pictures and videos, and hold them as often as possible. Enjoy the ride, don’t take anything for granted!
